1 for 7 Billion discusses its latest briefing with co-chairs of General Assembly negotiations

On 16 June, representatives from the 1 for 7 Billion campaign met with H. E. Mrs. Egriselda Aracely González López and H. E. Mr. Michal Mlynár, UN Permanent Representatives of El Salvador and Slovakia (respectively), co-chairs of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Revitalization of the General Assembly (AHWG) to discuss our latest briefing.

The briefing calls for progress during the current AHWG session on important outstanding reforms which are needed to strengthen future Secretary-General selection processes. Specifically, it calls for clarity on the requirements for nomination, a longer non-renewable term for future Secretaries-General, multiple candidates and an end to back room deals and monopolies on top UN jobs.

Over the next month the AHWG will be negotiating a resolution addressing the process to select future Secretaries-General and other executive heads. 1 for 7 Billion is urging states to use this opportunity while interest in the issue is high and to allow sufficient time for progress ahead of the anticipated 2026 selection process.
